This is a 1964 San Francisco Giants Season Replay using Out of the Park Baseball. More details on this project can be found on our About Retro Baseball Page,

April 17, 1964

St. Louis got a terrific performance from pitcher Ernie Broglio, but it wasn't enough to beat the San Francisco Giants as they fell 4-3. Broglio was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 7 innings of 5-hit ball. Tom Haller went 1-3, while adding 2 RBI for San Francisco. In a tie game with no one out in the bottom of the ninth, Haller came through with a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It was the second straight day that Haller ended the game with a walk off hit. He homered yesterday afternoon in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Cardinals 4-3.

"We'll savor this win," Haller told the San Francisco Times, "then get ready for the next game." The Giants are now 3-1 on the season and they are tied with the Milwaukee Braves for first place in the NL. They will go for the sweep of the Cardinals tomorrow afternoon.

Bobby Bolin will get the start for the Giants and Roger Craig will get the ball for the Cardinals. In the American League the Twins and the Yankees are both off to 3-0 starts and are tied for first place.

Goose eggs were the order of the day for the Boston Red Sox as starter John Buzhardt shut out the Boston Red Sox 2-0 at Fenway Park. The Chicago pitcher struck out 5 and walked 1 while allowing 4 hits. "Buzhardt was good but he wasn't flawless," Boston manager Johnny Pesky said later. "We had a few opportunities to make something happen and we didn't do it. Not to take anything away from Chicago, but this is on us."
