Meet Will Johnstone, The #1 Draft Pick

January 1, 1954

1954 started out well for the Pirates as they won the draft lottery. They wasted little time in selecting Will Johnstone with the #1 pick.

Johnstone is a 27 year old right handed starting pitcher standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 195 pounds. He is a guy who will induce a ton of groundballs and hit between 93 and 95 mph on the radar gun.

Our Retro Baseball Scout, Scotty Carson had this to say about Johnstone:

"He throws five pitches with an outstanding slider. He will get guys to pound it in the ground and will give up very few homeruns"

Johnstone is also well known as a great clubhouse guy and our sources tell us this was a big deal to the Pirates. "There isn' a guy in baseball who doesn't respect Johnstone as a person" said one Pirates front office executive.

Look for Johnstone to contend for NL Cy Young Award in 1954 but not to be in a pennant race. The Pirates are projected to struggle this season as a team.
